I'm running Windows 9x or Windows XP and would like to be able to turn specific programs off at startup. Is there a simple way to do this?

Go to Start->Run and type "msconfig" (without the quotes). This utility will help lead you through some of your startup files.

-or-

1. Edit the programs through the registry at HKEY_[LOCAL_MACHINE/CURRENT_USER]/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Run
2. Search through the registry for "run" and do "keys" & "match whole string only" to find all programs that launch on startup
3. Use StartupCPL http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
4. Start > Run > msinfo32 (Note: This is read-only; you cannot disable anything)
5. Use jv16 Power Tools http://www.jv16.org/
6. Use autoruns.zip under the Miscellaneous section http://www.sysinternals.com/
7. Copy a version from a Windows XP install CD
