astounding that a majority of those are hotmail.com, yahoo.com, and aol.com

I remember a few services I've used that had pop3 emails needed when registering. Meh but that's messed up to do.
shouldn't scare people when stuff liek this is done, it's obvious it's just for people that haven't posted when their account is getting old, and for those that registered with a fake email. Faking [censored] is easy enough to understand.
If your paranoid, use redirects to encrypted networks, or encryption. If someone care enough to go beyond that, then faking [censored] isn't gonna help, because they already know who you are:/ *watchs people look left to right real fast, and FREAK OUT*
