SSH is basically a encryption secured telnet. It is used for remote consoles and other reasons that you find telnet frequently used.

so i can just use telnet to open it right, no more complicated than that, or anything more i should know

You need a special client which does the encryption. Your telnet client only sends out plain text. Check out PuTTY: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/

just out of curiosity what does SSH stand for...

SSH (Secure Shell) is a program that connects to another computer on a network. Once connected you can execute commands in a remote machine. It provides strong authentication and secure communications over unsecure channels.
