If you have tryed linux in the past or are thinking of trying linux for the first time you MUST try Linux mandrake 9.0.

Now a lot of peeps in here will talk bad about it but this is the perfect Distro to get started with. The install was a snap. It has enough help files, and the like on the GUI to keep you straight. The only thing this didn't do was jump into my CDROM and install it self.

For GUI enviroments if comes with KDE 3.0 and Gnome 2.something... Winmaker, +++ Very nice, very sexy. configureing a printer was a snap, even installiung a server was made easy enough for a newbie.

If you want a server enviroment I recomend installing Webmin. This is a GUI enviroment that makes keeping up with the server a snap. Come with plenty of games. Free Civ, Tux Racer etc etc etc....

Enough Office programs to choke a $5.00 hooker. a Winamp like MP3 player XMMS. VIm (m = modfied)

Comes with the latest build of Mozilla , though I recomend phoenix

Much of the old windows features you have grown used to you will still have in this distro. The command line might take some getting used to.

With 80% of the net on a Unix platform... If you wana learn to hack you have to learn Unix. This is the best place to start.

I brought the retail edition of mandrake for $40 bucks a few months back got part way to insalling it upuntil it asked me to put in my chosen user name then i founf out it doesnt have support for usb keyboards and mice, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Go to radio shack, you can buy a $5 adapter to make your USB device PS2. Spend $10 and use on of the most powerful operating systems (well, linux in general).

Well, for one, english please. The "new notepad" is just a document that someone has typed, double left click on it and it'll open and you can see what it is, if you don't want to have it there just right click on it and choose delete.

To "un hide" your documents, open "My Documents" and choose "Tools" then "Folder Options". Now you should see a tab named "view". Select the ratio box for "Show Hidden and System Files".

Now you should see all files in that directory, just right click what you don't want to be hidden and choose properties, then de-select the "hidden" ratio box.

Now click tools again, choose folder options, then choose the "view' tab, and select the ratio box for "Hide hidden or system files".

You want to keep your system files hidden so that stupid people don't delete them.

You are infected with the worm WORM_YAHA.K or with a modified version of it.

This is a mass-mailing worm that uses its own SMTP engine to propagate via email as an attachment, mailing itself to addresses retrieved from the infected system's Windows Address Book, Yahoo Messenger, MSN and .NET Messenger Services, and files found in all directories with extension names containing the string "HT."

This worm launches a DoS attack against a particular site. It runs on Windows 9x, NT, 2000, ME, and XP.

Unhappy new Yaha

A new version of the Yaha mass mailing email worm has been released, ready to trip up the unwary on their return to work next week.

Yaha-M (or Yaha-K as it is also described by some AV vendors) is spreading rapidly this week, after first appearing on December 21, MessageLabs notes in an updated advisory. The company has blocked 7,320 copies of the virus in the last 24 hours alone.

Like previous versions of Yaha, the latest variant typically spreads by email with subject lines such as "Enjoy this friendship Screen Saver" and infected attachments with filenames including (Hacker_The_LoveStory.scr, KOF_Sample.exe etc.) A full list is in MessageLabs' advisory and there's more info on the virus in an alert by Finnish AV specialists F-Secure.

F-Secure advises its business users to block this (and similar viruses) by stripping emails with attachments ending with .SCR and .EXE and .COM at the corporate gateway or firewall. AV vendors are updating their signature files to detect this latest mass mailer and protection is now largely in place.

Although nothing special, this virus has the potential to be a real nuisance when Net activity picks up again after the holiday season, at least judging by a large number of copies of the bug personally received by us at El Reg. �

uhh wtf does this have to do with being a linux newb i dont know, off track but going fast.

Mine did. I downloaded it off a mirror site. It is right there as you start the install.

I could have sworn USB mouse was an option. Shoot, my USB scanner, and printer were picked up fine. Heh, even USB Game pad. I would advise a second look man.

yap find out which is the supported package to install and dl it, should be simple enough, as USB support is quite spread these days, especially now since we are at version 2.0 of USB devices.

in fact I know its supported cause I had mandrake running on version 7.0 and it ran my USB keyboard.

For the brief time I used it, I found that RedHat 6.1 supported my USB keyboard and mouse - although it had a minor complaint about the keyboard. It still typed.

YaHa is a perfect reason of why attachments are blocked by my firewalls lol... Nothin like seein the encrypted copy of the file that i can nuke.
