I need help.I have a windows98. How can I make it so that users of my computer can hit cancel on the logging screen but it will say access denied or something like that?

And another thing is that my computer has been passed down from people to people, now I am the permanent user. So that means that I have a whole bunch of family user logins.Is it possible that I can discover the password or some way to get in?

First off, your first question answers your second. Some say it is possible to make an 'access denied' screen as you are saying. I haven't had much luck with it. The trick involves the registry. DO NOT MESS WITH THE REGISTRY WITHOUT FIRST BACKING IT UP AND LEARNING ABOUT IT! You can learn more at http://www.winguides.com
I believe I tried the reg hack once and it didn't work for me.
On the topic of your second question, just click cancel-as you said in your first question-when the prompt comes up. I think there is a way to delete these accounts but I'm not sure how. The only thing I can think of is deleting the .pwl's. I'm not sure if that will work, though.
Lastly, if you want a *more* secure windows operating system, consider investing in WinXP or Win2000.

As far as I know that login is for the "client for netbios" thing in windows which is what allows you to log onto a network. It doesn't directly have anything to do with logging into windows itself, so I don't think you can do anything about it, at least not on win98. Of course what dash is saying could help you, but to my knowledge you can't stop someone logging with it. Windows 98 is just not desigend for that.

And as for the rouge users, do you have admin privs? You could just delete em and forget they were ever there. But the actual passes are kept in the c:\Windows directory as .pwl files. Look for those and you can get em.

Theres a registry entry that makes it so that the cancel button isn't able to be clicked, but i don't recall what it is...

I'd go with XP more than 98, especailly if you have memory issues with 98 lol...

Lastly, client for microsoft networks has nothing to do with logging in to your computer lol...
