I was on Yahoo & chatting with my friend & i used netstat -n and it showed me his IP in foreign Add column. But when i sent him a file through Yahoo,i again tried netstat -n & this time there was a new row apart from previous row & this showed his add aswell but i think it was one denoting the transfer of file between us.But what i couldnt understand was that in this row it showed my Port as 2493 & under foreign add. it showed my friends Port as 80(which i guess is for HTTP).So does it use any port it feels like for File Transfer.Plzz help.

It uses a range.. and you dont actually see your friends ip when just chatting because of the way yahoo and msn work
user-> server-> other user But for file transfer this is impracticle so its user -> user so the ip's should of been different
I belive you can define a range that you allow msn or yahoo to use for sending files.. makes it easier on router users smile

yeah Blacknight, i know it aswell & this is surprising to me aswell but this happened with me & im in no mood of joke.We both were chatting & i asked him for his IP & when i used netstat -n there was his IP in the foreign add column & during file transfer when i put netstat -n again there was another row added into it .Since it was new row i thought it indicates Transfer & thats why i asked my previous qn. regarding ports.
But most surprisingly when he at his end used netstat -n (before file transfer) he couldnt see my IP.Im amazed.
God!! i never new i was a legend.Im creating history.Ha Ha Ha.But plzz help.

Shutup Blacknight & read my mail again,i said i was chatting with my FRIEND & i dont think u would mind to let ur friend know ur IP, if hes just learning with basics.Secondly,i know its strange but then it happened. But still im giving u the

I know it would be difficult to read but plzz adjust.well the key is Restore ur Browser window & then read ull see the Tables Properly.

Now check the first one(before File Transfer) & the 4th line & second table(during File Transfer) check the 7th & 8th line. Now the 7th line is for file tranfer(i think) & on this was based my first qn. that why it is using Port 80 for file transfer.

Anyways, forget it.Like u said i'd try it with others aswell to be sure. But do answer my first qn. regarding ports.Lastly, i needed to ask that why people on Dial Up conn. see their IP 127.0.0.1 when they use netstat -n, is it not the best way to get the IP or is it due to ISPs arrangements that they cant see their actual IPs.If im wrong somewhere, plzz check me.
