Under a proposal by President Bush, more than 8 million workers might not be paid extra for the overtime hours they work. President Bush can make these changes through executive order, even over objections from Congress. Please show your support for overtime pay during the Overtime Pay National Week of Action by signing this petition.

Is there even any legit reason for this proposal? I mean, seriously? Bush is doing all he can to enact bills/laws/etc. to increase executive power and override Congress. Truly sad.

Whats truly sad is the fact that Americans are letting him get by with this [censored]! Can you imagine another 4 years of this crap?

Er... can someone please explain the "other side" to this story? I mean, I am not a fan of Bush, but he doesn't seem like the kind of guy/President that would pass something like this.

I don't think hard working Americans care what his reasons are for doing this, all they know is that they are going to lose money thats helping keep food on their tables and paying their bills. As far as I can see, the only ones benefitting from this, is bush, and greedy buisness owners.

i agree with jon on this. like i said b4, i prefer to hear both sides of the story. and you don't go taking away overtime without a good [censored] reason for it. i mean...you just can't.//

the only reason i have heard from bush is that he wants to save big companies money but what he doesnt care about is the fact that he's going to [censored] over the rest of the country.

put it this way: if the average person makes $7/hr and work 40hrs a week in 1 week so that means they make $280 and that's before taxes after taxes it's $196. but if that peson does 5 hours of over time they'll make a total of $332.50 before taxes and $232.75 after taxes. but with out that over time pay for 45 hrs of work they would only get $315 before taxes and $220.50 after. that's $12.15 less when lossing time and a half pay though some places pay double time and a half. but in this country every penny counts. that's $12.15 more for bills, cloths, food, education... as the hours add up so does the money lost and so is time lost from ur family.

what if some one works 50 hrs a week at $7hr. that's $245 with out over time with over time pay it jumps to $269.50. that's $24.50 more.

do ya get my point? i hope so...

jesus.. do you guys even read anything about this? while i agree that overall the bill isn't the best, but damn, there are some very good things in it. it "would require overtime for workers earning up to $22,100 a year, up from the current ceiling of $8,060." how can you tell me that's a bad thing? it would also "provide modest increases over last year for low-income school districts, AIDS treatment, Head Start, job training and biomedical research at the National Institutes of Health"

and this effecting 8 million people? the Labor Department said the real figure is closer to 644,000. now, that is a huge difference.

"The regulations would not affect workers covered by union contract, but the Labor Department says as many as 22 million jobs may be covered by the new rules. The Bush administration furthermore says the rules will only affect salaried, white-collar office workers who do not perform manual labor"

However Fleshy,
The bill is writen in a way that many tech jobs can be classed into a "white collard position" or management position. Verizon for example has a center in the west where everyone is a manager. Some have people under them and some do not. This means that they can avoid paying overtime to these people.

Of course the bill intends to do good, but as with many poorly writen bills this one is dangerous. This bill was voted down already by Both houses in congress, the bush administration is trying to sneeak it in using less traditional means now.

An example below

http://www.theadvertiser.com/business/html/E8DA9EEF-9871-4AAF-A485-C5EBD8B69624.shtml

Mislowski, a 33-year employee of the Piggly Wiggly supermarket chain, supervises two other workers as the manager of the meat department at a store in Appleton. He earns about $100 in overtime each pay period by working a sixth day every other week.

What makes the debate so confusing for many is that workers like Mislowski are subject to several possible tests under the proposed rule one for white-collar employees making $65,000, another for executives and yet another for administrative workers. Other occupations also have a test for defining a professional. If a worker passes one of the tests, he can be judged to be exempt from overtime.

the above was taken from a random news site.

I am a union worker. I see it like this also. CWA communications workers of america oppose this. Now they get a % of my paycheck every week. If I get overtime, they get a cut. If this bill was for us, CWA would not object. Because I get more money, they get more money.

http://www.cwa-legis-pol.org/

They seem to follow the bills being passed that affect working americans pretty closely here. Of course they are in the buissness of hyping things up and recruiting members so I read other sources too. But this is a good place to see new bills.

hey sin tax, i wasn't trying to say it's all good. i just had to point out a few things that were not mentioned about the bill. this is taken from that article you posted: "Only about 644,000 workers earning above-average wages would lose overtime pay, while a larger group of 1.3 million low-wage workers earning less than $425 a week would get a new guarantee of overtime eligibility"

Do you guys really believe this [censored] you are saying. I have to admit I dont like a lot of things that Bush has done but do you really think that Gore would have been better he is an idiot with a capitol I. Remember he invented the internet. To be honest the only thing I do like Bush is his foreign policy. I say whoever took down those towers or whoever helped them or whoever was cheering in the streets when they fell LINE THIR [censored] UP TO GET KICKED. What I really dont like about Bush is his attack on civil liberties but be honest with yourself are the Democrats for more Liberty? Hell no. All I see any government officials do is take away Liberty. The only party that supports more liberty is the Libertarians and they dont stand a chance in hell getting elected because they are not giving handouts to everybody like everybody else. The corporations support the Republicans and labor unions and people wanting handouts support the Democrats. So what the hell its hopeless lets move to South America.

First off, if you ever harass one of my members in this fashon again I will ban you; second off, if you ever harass my WIFE like that again I'll fly to your home and beat you senseless.

Everyone on the board deserves to be able to post with dignety and respect, obviously neither of which you can comprehend, so if you're going to be a little prick you can go elsewhere, we survived without you for so long, you won't be missed.

We are not NATO, NATO is an organization that we helped create, any parties can vote other parties out of the structure, perhaps you should go look it up little boy.

And no one cares if you're pissed, it's not your board in the first place.

http://www.nato.int/

good site.

perhaps when he said that the US was NATO he meant that the US is the biggest most powerful country in NATO, meaning that we pretty much run the show. Which I agree with to an extent.

i don't know if getting booted out of NATO is such a bad thing. obviously we really don't need the support of those countries. and even if we do, we can always strong-arm them when we need them. i know that sounds shitty, and it is. but it's true.

Employees not covered by the new rules also could be hurt: By reclassifying many of their workers as exempt from overtime pay, employers most likely would assign overtime only to them and eliminate overtime for other workers."

...BTW, I think nurses would disagree with the fact that they are labeled as "white-collar office workers who do not perform manual labor" What do you call wiping asses and waiting on [censored] sick people all day? A tea party? Of course Bush would know nothing about that because he has time enough to go on his wonderful vacation ever other week instead of being concerned with OUR country that he has turned upside down, not to mention turning the few friends we had against us all for what? So he could get back at the one who threatened his daddy. He wants to support the causes listed, great! How about he quits giving our money to other countries? How about he takes a pay cut, he's making $400,000 a year to [censored] America's reputation(http://www.govspot.com/know/preside
ntsalary.htm)and is already a millionaire, I think he can afford it. Taxpayers support this country, why the [censored] not take away the overtime pay so the rich bastards can get richer. Sounds like a hell of an idea. Well, as long as you're rich, and I'm not. So, [censored] that idea.

Let's see how much money Bush has.

George Jr.'s Financial History

1978 Founded Arbusto Energy with $17,500 from his education trust fund and $3 million in funds from family friends and backers of Bush Sr's political aspirations. They made no money but got tax writeoffs so they were quite happy.
1979 James Bath, a close family friend, pays $50,000 for 5% of Arbusto. Bath was U.S. representative for Salem bin Laden, Osama's wealthy Saudi father.
1982 George W renames bankrupt company Bush Exploration, sells 10% to Philip Uzielli for $1,000,000, and takes company public to raise $1,400,00.
1984 Bush Exploration (broke again) merges with Spectrum 7 Energy Corporation, owned by William DeWitt and Mercer Reynolds. Bush becomes CEO, gets 16.3%, and a salary of $75K. Reynolds is now ambassador to Switzerland.
1986 Spectrum 7, nearly bankrupt, is acquired by Harken Energy Corp. Bush receives 227,000 shares of Harken stock and is made director and consultant to the company at up tp $120K salary, $600k in stock options and a couple of hundred thousand in free or forgiven loans.
1987 Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) provides $25 million cash infusion. Saudi Sheik Abdullah Bakhsh joins the board with 17.6% ownership.
1989 Harken hides losses by selling Aloha Petroleum, a susidiary to insiders for 12 million, $12 million of which a loan held by Harken. The $8 million (supposed) profit on the sale is counted as Harken income by Arthur Andersen, the accountant.
1989 DeWitt and Reynolds help Bush buy the Texas Rangers for $86 million. Bush invests $500K (borrowed on his Harken stock), gets 10% and becomes the public half of a general management duo with Rusty Rose. A new $135M stadium is built with taxpayer money for the team which it eventually owns.
1989 At a December meeting of the Board of Directors of Harken, George W signs off on use of a recently created Cayman Island subsidiary to pursue company's $25 million contract to drill for oil off the coast of Bahrain.
1990 In January, Bahrain signs a exclusive oil drilling with Harken to the surprise of analysts. Harken stock shoot up in value.
1990 At March 14 Harken Board of Director's meeting, Bush is appointed as the chairman of a board committee to investigate the restructuring of $12 million in secured notes held by the group of Harken insiders who, in 1989, purchased the Aloha Petroleum subsidiary from Harken. Board also approves sale of Aloha.
1990 June 22: W. sells his Harken stock for $848,560 - two weeks before $23 million in losses revealed. He pays the Rangers loan out of the proceeds.
1990 In July, Aloha Petroleum sold to Advance Petroleum Marketing which relieves the associated debt. Advance Petroleum was owned by David Halbert who had invited GWB to invest $10k or so in Allied Home Pharmacy several years earlier which yielded GWB up to a million in 96.
1990 Iraq invades Kuwait
1991 April: SEC investigates GWB for failing to report Insider Trading of Harken Energy stock. The investigation was led by James Doty, a friend and businees lawyer for Bush in the past.
1993 October: GWB asks for letter from the SEC regarding the investigation. The letter, signed by SEC Associate Director Bruce A. Hiler, specifically refuses to exonerate him or to preclude further SEC actions.
1994 GWB Elected Governor of Texas
1998 GWB sells his Advance stock and his Rangers stock for 16 million.
2000 In an unprecedented extra-constitutional action, GWB was appointed President of the United Staes of America by justices appointed during his father's executive tenure despite the fact that his opponent had clearly won the election.

He's got a hell of a lot more money than I do, why doesn't he start throwing some of his money around.

(I really need to stay away from these rant threads)
