Distributed intrusion detection system? Have any of you heard of? If so, how affective is this site to pop crackers? I mean i'm sure any descent cracker covers his tracks enough to not be bullseyed on this site, even though the info on this site is outdated?

I don't know, just something my teacher at school showed us. He seems to be pretty tight on his security at University he works for(head of IT dept.)

I am a beyond ameature so please excuse any ignorance on my behalf......

Ok, due to your annoying follow up I actually checked this site out. First off, how did you determine their information is outdated? Did you even read their introduction? The purpose is not to "pop crackers," as you so eloquently put it. They are trying to track trends in Internet security and help programmmers develop better firewalls. Although identifying individual IPs (and that fake spam-this-address-we-will-blacklist-spammers [MUAHAHHAHA!] at the bottom of the main page) is a little over the top IMO. I don't think the site is popular enough yet to be a must-use security resource, but it's interesting to say the least.

So it was annoying huh. Anyway, I forgot to includ "might be" before "outdated" I only assumed that because of DHCP, meaning the IP's might have been reissued to other machines. By the time they get a chance to post them on the site. I'm sure the intent purose of this site wasn't to "pop crackers" but sure seems like a decent device to at least attempt to....and no I didn't read their introduction, it was introduced in class by the instructor who made us browse to his block of subnets and explain how he identifies crackers on his university network...since most security threats are from within.....

What do you know, due to my "annoying follow up" you were at the least.......interested

I just wanted to give a headsup on whats out there.

Peace
