Officials in Russia today confirmed that the emergency shutdown procedure began at a nuclear power plant in the country, but said that no higher radiation levels were detected. The incident occurred late last night.

Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry released a statement that said: "Initial reports indicate the cause of the shutdown was a problem with the safety system. The reactor has been taken off-line." It is expected to be restarted later today.
