The state of New York is one of eBay's top sellers, it has emerged yesterday. The state has been using the internet auction house to sell surplus property for the last year, it has been announced.

Spokesperson for the Office of General Services in NY, Jennifer Meicht, said "You would be amazed at what people will buy. It's been great." The state's username is "nyssurplus-albany." Current auctions are Goodyear tyres and storage lockers.

Meicht told the NY Post that "We started as an experiment, selling some surplus property and, based on our initial success, we've been slowly adding more items." So far, eBay auctions have earned the state US$300,000
