Microsoft is aiming at dominating the growing market for software for automobiles. It wants its OS in every single vehicle. Microsoft does admit "It's a lofty goal." However, several cars already have Microsoft installed in them.
The BMW 7 series, Citroen, Daimler, Fiat, Volvo, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Subaru and Toyota have already installed Microsoft into some of their cars. Some see the devices as distracting and don't want more gadgets that will distract drivers from driving.
Such software warns of hazards ahead and seeks different routes, pays tolls, warns if oil is low and controls many vehicle functions. In 12 to 36 months, Microsoft will offer the TBox which will make its software gadgets hands free.
