December 10-12 will see Geneva hosting the first World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). Leaders from almost 200 countries will attend.
A main point of focus at the conference will concern how the Internet is currently governed, especially how the non-profit, California-based International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) neglects the 3rd world in favor of business.
Some want the Internet to be governed worldwide by one body. The UN's 138-year-old International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has been suggested. The body could distribute domain names, control spam, and not favor any one country business-wise.
