Disney is going to begin test marketing new chemically treated DVD's. the new DVD's will be treated with a chemical that reacts with oxygen and makes the DVD's red, but during the course of 48 hours the disk will become black, and be rendered unreadable.

The goal of the new chemically treated discs is to allow people to rent DVD's from virtually any location, and not have to return the disk.

Sounds like Sony Divx. At lest I think it was Sony who came out with the idea. Rent a DVD, if you like it, call the company and they will charge your account and make it so that the movie can play more then just once. This required a special player, in addition to having it connected to the phone line. In the event that you do not like the movie they all you need to do is put it in the circular file.

This sounds ignorant to me. Who would set up a store front to rent crap they do not get back? In a video store you get a big rush on a movie when it is new. Then you get to keep renting it out and make money on it long after the rush.

With this, the store owner rents you the DVD then has to buy another one. Grant it they will be but cheap most likely, but why not just buy it once?

Add yo that this is wasetful. Not very enviromentaly nice of disney. This is another way for some big company to make more money on the return buy. I hope we are not stupid enough to fall for it.

It is a big game. The entertainment industry wants to make it easier for us to rent movies so that we will get more (hopefully). But at the same time trying to prevent the media from being pirated. Hence the idiotic idea of putting viruses into music CD's. It is a never-ending race, and the crackers keep catching up with the entertainment industry.
