Recently, the RIAA claimed a big legal victory when a federal appeals court forced Verizon to turn over the names of 4 of its users who downloaded MP3s on the Internet. Earthlink followed suit and turned over one name.

To address the issue, the RIAA has sent cease and desist letters which order the five users to stop downloading MP3s that they do not pay for. Many expected bigger penalties from the RIAA which will not say who the users are or show the letters.

Verizon is taking the RIAA to Appeals Court and challenging what happened. This process will start September 16th. Meanwhile, all the RIAA needs is a subpoena to get the identities of people who download MP3s for free off the Internet.
