This AD makes it seem like they are a government agency, that you are under investigation, and your ISP is also in on it. It also implies you have commited illegal activity, and of course encourages you to buy software to get rid of evidence.

Now, my big thing here, is ignorant people. Newbies to the internet in general. Can you imagine some guy just getting on the internet, checking out an adult content site they mentioned at work, and seeing this?

Damn right he would panic and buy the software. I can think of many similar scenarios.

So is this illegal or not? And if so, why? I find this very wrong.

BTW, I was visiting a MAME arcade building site and that came up, so I think it just guesses people are doing things wrong. But then again, aren't the majority of ppl surfing the net, going to or have gone to sites that would not like to be made public?

Well, I think that the add is stupid, and I don't think anyone would fall for that. Plus, I belive that everything that comes in a pop-up, pop-under, delayed-pop or anything else, is not worth my time and I don't see why you say they they seem like a government agency. Why would the police forensic investigators want ot ban it, if the Police Officers buy it, and they claim to be a goverment agency.

Just another stupid add.

All it does I believe is grabs the *.suffix

So adelphia.net was adelphia and I believe Energy pointed out rr.com was just RR and not roadrunner.

Heh... They should hang the person who created that ad... It's too well thought out. Thousands of newbies will fall for that...

Yeah , first it looked like a really stupid add (red bg and white txt), then the second time I entered it was with a black bg saying "they" are after me and I will get arrested, and also getting my domain. Weird. Well, anyhow, this will probably scare out a newbie that just visited lots of adult content sites into actually buying their product, and I don't think anyone will take action against them.

Yeah, the page changes each time you refresh. Easy little script that loads up a random html page each time anyone visits. Pretty good idea, heh.

hehe a classico indeed.

ive seen loads of ads like that over the years and people do fall for it, and not just newbies but more business people that have nothing better to do than to look at lezzy pics after work hours

i encourage any type of advertisement within legal limits or not, cause the illegal ones sure have a certain spike about them

The use of "hacker" to mean "security breaker" is a confusion on the part of the mass media. We hackers refuse to recognize that meaning, and continue using the word to mean, "Someone who loves to program and enjoys being clever about it."
