I have an Athlon XP 2400 and need a new heatsink/fan since the one I have sucks balls. I can't even format more than 50% of the way before it gets to 75 degrees celsius and makes that warning noise, which is really morse code for "Explosion Imminent, shut me the [censored] off."
My heatsink is the Thermaltake Volcano 9. There is also the chance that I messed up attatching it.
Noise is not really much of a concern, but I would like to have my copmputer running without going deaf. Thanks to anyone who helps. | | | |

I have a 2600xp and find from 2200xp upwards the retails heatsink/fan are eceptional compared to thier previous shithouse h/fs. Anyway, could be a manufacure fault with your motherboard, improper positions of heatsink. Need more info

I believe they call it lapping. faulty heatsink instalation can cause problems with tempature. Improper application of the lube (I forget what its called right now) can also cause reduce the heatsink effectiveness. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 574 Likes: 1 UGN GFX Whore | | UGN GFX Whore Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 574 Likes: 1 | Thermal paste?
After trying to format a drive, I reset and went into the BIOS and looked at the temp. It stayed at 61 degrees celsius for about ten minutes, then I shut it off. COuld it be a problem with the sensor? Hardware or software? Is it possible that my processor is just sitting there getting hot?
I don't think it's the hsf anymore. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2003 Posts: 35 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Aug 2003 Posts: 35 | yeh the thermastat beneath the cpu could be problematic, might want to also flash and update to most recent bios which may solve a few temp flaws which u might need to refer to thier latest docs

The heatsink never felt warmer than room temperature when I touched it, so I doubt my cpu is getting as hot as it says it is. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 815 nobody | | nobody Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 815 | Make sure you read what the BIOS update is for before you update. Flashing the BIOS is can be dangerous. If you [censored] it up, say buh bye to that expensive motherboard you have. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2003 Posts: 35 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Aug 2003 Posts: 35 | Flashing BIOS is not as bad as it sounds, follow instructions make sure not to reset the pc in the process and you will be fine. Follow the manual, read the recent documentation and instructions of the version of bios, update it then also back it up which can be easily done. Worse comes to worse Cold Sunn, you can always purchase a new BIOS IC or find one second hand. Regards D347H

But it might be a good idea to turn of any settings that when reachiing a specfic temp the pc shutsdown, anyway it would help if u listed all spects Cold Sunn
