I see the UGN top poster thread here an I had an idea. why don't we measure the post by quality instead of by quantity. have some kind of point system and allow moderator and admin to give a point to somebody when they notice a good informational post, a really helpfull answer, and when somebody has an idea for improving the board. you could have some kind of awards for a certain number of points, like access to vip forums, or a custom title, ugn email address, irc privledges, and other stuff which wouldn't cost Gizmo any money This would encourage better posts and more activity on the board, while at the same time honoring those who actually help and not those who have the highest number of posts. This is just an idea, it would seen kinda cool to do it. I noticed that we already have somethin like this but it's not being used. I know it wouldn't be too hard to implement and it could help the board out a lot. maybe more people would start writing articles about stuff they know, post code on the board, and try to improve it overall. This board only exists because of it's user and it would be nice to involve everybody in the process of improving UGN.

I am a click away from seconding this.. But how do we keep favorites out of it. For example, I like the older crew not the new guys.(just a for instance people) and a new guy posts a good topic already covered. I decide not to give points, but he really deserves them.

A post count is just a count and is by nature accurate and fair. Tell me how to make it fair and accurate and I'm all for it as well.

well, if somebody here is being helpful and a good addition to UGN he will gain respect quickly. If somebody jus comes and talks bullshit and bitches at newbies, and then once in a blue moon drops a good post of course he will not get any points because the mods don't like him. this kind of system would encourage people to behave themselves. don't get me wrong, I'm against control and authority, but I'm for a nice and informative community of people that are here to help each other. it's kind of like school, if you're the good, smart kid nobody gives a [censored] about you. but if you run ur mouth and cause problems, everybody pay attention to you. That is not a good environment, cause kids who are smart and do good are invisible while the idiots get all the attention. and of course, if you're a mod you should have a certain level of integrity and not abuse ur power. Like Gizmo has the strikes system, when you [censored] up you get a strike, what would stop him from abusing that against people he doesn't like for no good reason? Should he just not use it then? I don't think that would be an issue. and any ways, points would be jus an additional things. only for those people who actually want to be here and be a part of UGN. those people will prove they are worthy, and if they can't, big deal, they can still post. well, it was jus an idea, no final plan, but I think this could be worked out easily and should help the board out a lot. let me know if anyone has anymore questions.

Some quick suggestions til I think about this more:

Limit the number of strikes (bad) or bumps (good) a person can give per say week and per recipient. So you can't go around and strike everyone whereas you cannot bump someone for every post. Also show specifically (public also) what posts are bumped/strikes and the stats in the side of the persons info.

This makes it obviously if people are just bumping someone to bump them or if it is the quality of the post.

I am also a big fan of the /. layout. They can rate posts and also give it a category like funny, interesting, informative, stupid, etc. So this way someone could scroll through one of our longer more indepth topics and easily see what posts are relevant and what posts will make them laugh.

I would be surprised if UBB was w/o a /. mod already. Which would make customization much easier than creating something w/ the rulesets from scratch.

we had a rating mod on here before; no one liked it... Where you could vote a post popular or stupid... I had it up for 3 upgrades and dropped it with 6.4..

I say numerical and category. Would be interesting, b/c then could have monthly results that explained more about members.

UGN Angriest Member
UGN Funniest Member
UGN Stupidest Member

etc, related to number of posts of a certain type and ranking.????
