It is illegal to receive any pay-per-view shows using a descrambler without contacting the cable company and letting them know. However, it is legal to record a scrambled pay-per-view/H.B.O program on your VCR, and then later on you can just watch the tape and use your descrambler with the VCR. laugh

Can I ask what law this gets around? I always thought it was illegal to unscramble or attempt to unscramble the signal? Is this not apply b/c it must be during transmission?

Every state has different cable laws, but Im pretty sure this applies everywhere.
its legal to record a tv show, and off any channel you receive, you legally receive the scrambled channels and therefor you can record it, once a show/movie is on your tape its yours to do with as you pleas, though Im still pretty sure its illegal to make bootleg copies etc.
I don’t believe scrambling laws apply to tapes

It's illegal to use any descrambler that wasn't issued and serviced and whatever by the cable companies. As in, buying one from a crackhead or building one on the internet. That implies that you can make one yourself and just tell them you are doing it, as in "I am getting things from you for free that I should have to pay for, cut my service off immedietely."

I'm not positive about those laws, but I am pretty sure.

Cold sun, its completely legal in every state in America to own and operate a descrambler, though in some states its illegal to buy one. its only illegal to use a descrambler to illegally receive pay-tv programing etc without the cable companies consent, and some people actually buy descramblers so they don’t have to rent one from the cable company and use them legally to save money,
