Well, Iv finally broken my protocols forum cherry,

BiTorrent, the new latest and greatest transfer protocol.

Quote:
BitTorrent is a Peer-to-Peer Filesharing program created by Bram Cohen. It is a protocol for distributing files. It identifies content by url and is designed to integrate seamlessly with the web. Its advantage over plain http is that when multiple downloads of the same file happen concurrently, the downloaders upload to each other, making it possible for the file source to support very large numbers of downloaders with only a modest increase in its load.
-----------------------------

Using this new protocol, it becomes possible to transfer files to hundreds of people using relatively little bandwidth by any single individual.

Bitorrent works on Windows, Macs, and Linux

I have gotten some ISOs from them also w/o problems and much faster than the FTPs on the release days. I think it is very good for relieving the bandwidth on the linux FTP servers.

What I hope can be done is people will pick their favorite software. Ex OpenOffice, RedHat, Mandrake, etc and leave Bitto running in the background to the point where even when it isn't a recent release, people can always get it at a good speed and the software makers do not have to worry about bandwidth. Simply go ahead and seed it to a few fast connections.

As of now, once the storm is gone after the initial release of something, Bitto loses alot of its power. Otherwise a great program, protocol, and idea.

Warez related:

A few of my friends got there cable connection shut down because of bit-torrent. I guess however it works they (your isp) is able to easily track down whatever you are doing through bit-torrent. As you can see I don't know much about it but I thought it was pretty interesting when they got the email saying exactly what they were downloading, when, and so on. For that very reason I don't trust bit-torrent one bit.

If an ISP was spying on what I download or upload, Id be phoning my lawyer.

What most likely happened is some RIAA like company's (not the actual RIAA.. you know what I mean.) found the site your friends were downloading warez from, connected to the tracker and got the IPs of every single person downloading the illegal file. and then sent a threatening email to the ISPs of the people who were downloading the warez. then the ISP's to prevent themselves getting sued (or there customers) disconnected those peoples service.

Usually in the intellectual rights battle, the ISP's usually try to protect average joe warez [censored]. and as a result the people who get disconnected are ignorant as to what transpired to get disconnected, and blame it on there ISP..
ISP's are usually the good guys.
