U.S. Secretary of Commerce Don Evans yesterday announced he wants to change the structure of the department's technology and telecommunications policy divisions.
The new structure would combine the Technology Administration, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration and the e-commerce policy functions of the International Trade Administration into one consolidated agency.
Deputy Secretary of Commerce Sam Bodman, NTIA administrator Nancy Victory and Under Secretary of Technology Phil Bond all gave their nods of approval to the plan.
Under the proposed organizational structure, the under secretary for technology would oversee the new agency that would focus on a range of issues including technical standards, spectrum management and technology and e-commerce policy issues.
The proposed changes will require Congressional approval.
