You can telnet to any port on any host, then you need to know the procedure or protocol to initiate a session and get information.

What are you talking about? Please be more specific.

Ok man, You just opened up all kinds of opportunities for people to flame the living hell out of you. But seeing as how I just woke up and I haven't even had a cup of coffee yet, I'm gonna be nice.

Soooo, which hostname for telnet eh?

That depends. First of all, what telnet client are you using? I suggest either the built in windows client (start-->run-->cmd-->telnet) or a little program I like called Putty . For now I'm gonna assume that you are using the command line telnet. If you're not you should be able to figure out what is going on enough to figure out what you are looking for.

For the command line telnet, you enter something like this:

c:\> telnet hostname

Which I'm sure you've seen, and is the exact reason you are here asking this question. So here is what they mean by hostname, either te hostname of the computer, or the IP address. So you can do this:

c:\> telnet 127.0.0.1

or you can do this:

c:\> telnet localhost

And both of those will try to connect to your own computer. But say you wanted to connect to microsoft:

c:\> telnet www.microsoft.com

or, use the ip for microsoft

c:\> telnet 207.46.134.222

You should read the telnet help too, like this:

c:\> telnet /?

I hope that made sense to you, and I hope it was what you were asking for that matter. Your question really didn't make a lot of sense. And it's "which" not "witch". A Witch is an ugly old crone who flies around on a broomstick at halloween wink

Simple. You don't have a telnet sever running for it to connect to.

rofl... The server you're connecting to has to be running some sort of daemon capable of communication with telnet... Such as TelnetD, i think MS has a telnet daemon...

If it won't connect to your local host then you're not running a daemon capable of communications with telnet (at least one you can read).
