"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" garnered a record 11 Oscars 2/29, including Best Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay and Score. "Ben-Hur" (1959) and "Titanic" (1997) also won 11 Oscars.
The film won every award for which it was nominated. The previous record for such a feat was nine categories, held by "The Last Emperor" (1988) and, somewhat ironically, the 1958 film "Gigi."
Director Peter Jackson paid tribute to his native New Zealand, where all three "Rings" movies were filmed.
Sean Penn won Best Actor for "Mystic River" and Charlize Theron won Best Actress for "Monster."
