I just would like to know how I could get an IP address off someone on my MSN account.

I use a packet sniffer but it only captures hotmail server packets when I try and use it with msn.

Thanks for your help smile

That's because you're only connecting to the MSN servers. You have to open a direct connection to the person whose IP address you're trying to find. Also, to view IP addresses of computers you're connected to, try "netstat -an" on the command line (or what you think is DOS; which Windows Operating systems haven't been built on top of since ME and 98)

And whenever I connect to a video game server and type netstat I can't see thier IP address. I can't even see the server's IP address.

Is this for the same reason?

You can see the IP address of anything you have established a connection to. If you're connected to the video game server and you can't see the IP address, then you're doing something wrong.

You should at LEAST be able to see the IP address of the server itself as you're connected to it.

I can't see it. The server address is using UDP/IP and I typed "netstat -an" and can't find the server IP address.

There is some strange IP addresses in thier though.

Is this like a firewall blocking me from seeing the IP or something?

But other then that it is not there, when I type status in console I get the server IP address it says:

UDP/IP 203.206.95.17:27021

But I can't see that anywhere in CMD when I type "netstat -an".

Hmm, I do see random IP addresses but I don't see the ip address of people I'm talking to on msn. I used both "netstat" then "netstat -an"

Am I doing something wrong?

Send them a picture or a larger file to open a direct connection and then use netstat.

With Messenger you connect to the server. All messages are sent via the server to the re cepient. You only ever establish a connection to the messenger server, so it the other person's info will NEVER show up in netstat. Unless you establish a direct connection to them some other way.

Heh, ok smile

Also sending an html email with a tracked image in it... ie. an image you record every ip hit from. Like <img src="your_host.com/image.gif"> and then checking the logs.

I tried that. sending them attachments. I still don't see there IP address appear on netstat. I looked, while the file was transfering, I saw ip numbers, but they aren't there ip numbers.

netstat will show you open ports/active connections/closing connections. If you do not have a direct connection to the system you are trying to find, then it will not help you. Chances are though if you already have a connection to some system, you already have the IP (or DNS name which is just as good).

I suggest you read up on the tool you want to use before you try and do something with it. You are not going to bang in a nail if you have fork in your hand wink That and understand the arena you are playingin. In this case, the messenger protocol:

http://www.hypothetic.org/docs/msn/index.php

Read that, and whatever else you google (And I do expect you to google for more wink to learn as much as you can about MSN to find out how you can do what you want with it.

Eiither that or give up smile

Could you direct them to a site that you run and look through a log?
Or is this the hard way?
