Steam

Steam is a digital distribution, digital rights management, multiplayer and communications platform developed by Valve Corporation. It is used to distribute a wide range of games and related media entirely over the internet, stretching from oneman independent efforts to some of the world's most popular games. Steam is set apart from its peers in terms of functionality primarily by its residency in the system tray, and the desktop tasks that the client software performs to make use of that position. As of June 19, 2009, 730 games are available on Steam, and as of February 18, 2009, there are over 20 million user accounts.Steam allows users to purchase computer games entirely digitally. Instead of receiving a box, disc, or even CD key, purchased software is immediately attached to the user's Steam account. Content can be downloaded from Steam servers unlimited times to any number of internetconnected computers that have the Steam client installed. The client works similarly to a feed reader the user selects the game they want on their computer and Steam then automates the process of downloading the content and keeping it up to date. The latest version of the game is immediately downloaded, and if there are multiple versions e.g. a 64bit edition the correct one will be chosen automatically based on the computer's hardware andor software environment. This process happens every time Steam is started online or a game is launched, ensuring that as many users as possible will have the latest software.Steam transfers content over its own protocol, as opposed to the more common web protocols HTTP and FTP. It downloads from a set of 174 dedicated 'content servers' spread out across the world, connecting to several at once to try to ensure a fast and stable connection. The servers are organized into geographic 'cells' to help clients choose intelligently which to connect to.In addition Steam can validate its downloaded content for errors, a process that gives many of the benefits of reinstalling in a fraction of the time. Valve AntiCheat, Valve's proprietary anticheat system, can ban those who modify their games to gain unfair advantage. Steam's server browser allows users to search, filter, bookmark and join internet and LAN servers for games that integrate with it. It can be accessed from the desktop and from an integrated game's menu system, and queries Friends to show a list of servers to which a user's contacts are connected. Steam has a Distributed File System that allows a game to launch before it has been completely downloaded. By creating lists of files and requesting them only when about to be needed, a linear game can be begun with only the executable code and a buffer of the first few areas downloaded. In the worstcase scenario, the game will stall while Steam downloads in the background. However, this feature is rarely put to use. Steamintegrated games are stored as single noncompressed archive files with the extension .gcf. This helps to make games more portable, to stop users from accidentally overwriting important files, and to allow for easy modification of resources, which can be disallowed by individual servers. A 'No Cache File' system is provided for games that do not integrate. Here, a .ncf index file points to a folder of loose files somewhere else on the system. The Steam Cloud allows games to upload savegame files to the Steam servers. This gives players access to their saved singleplayer games and key configurations from any computer.

Notepad is a simple text editor included in all versions of Microsoft Windows since Windows 1.0 in 1985.Notepad is a common textonly plain text editor. The resulting files " typically saved with the .txt extension " have no format tags or styles, making the program suitable for editing system files that are to be used in a DOS environment. One notable feature of Notepad is that it does not support formatting of any kind if textrich text is copied from a web page and pasted into a word processor, the formatting and embedded metadata comes along with the text, and can be difficult to remove. However, if text is copied from a formatted web site, pasted into Notepad, then copied again from Notepad before being pasted into a destination program, Notepad will have stripped all of the formatting. An alternative of this use is, however, provided in many word processors through the possibility to paste unformatted text, which may be easier to use with a little initial effort.1As an interesting aside, Notepad does support both lefttoright and righttoleft based languages, and one can alternate between these viewing formats by pressing and releasing the arrow key followed by CtrlShift, using the right or left arrow and shift keys to go to righttoleft format or lefttoright format, respectively.

Microsoft OneNote, officially Microsoft Office OneNote, is a software package for freeform information gathering, and multiuser collaboration. OneNote is most commonly used on laptops or desktop PCs, but it is especially well suited for use on penenabled Tablet PCs, in environments where pen, audio or video notes are more appropriate than an intensive use of keyboards. The interface metaphor underlying OneNote is that of an electronic version of the familiar tabbed threering binder which can be used directly for making notes, but also to gather pages printed or sent from other applications. Pages can be moved inside the binder, annotated at will by use of electronic ink, wordprocessing or drawing tools, and can contain embedded multimedia recordings and web links. As a container and repository of information gleaned from a variety of sources, a OneNote notebook is well suited for organizing information for a course or a research project. OneNote's file format .one was proprietary. However, in newer versions certainly 2003 2007 it is XML based and Microsoft have published the schema. This and the published API has resulted in a small number of extensions being written. One of OneNote's salient innovations is the integration of search features and indexing into a freeform graphics and audio repository. Images eg. screen captures, embedded document scans or even photographs can be searched for embedded text content. Electronic ink annotations can also be searched as text. Audio recordings can also be searched phonetically by giving a text key, and can be replayed concurrently with the notes taken during the recording. Its multiuser capability allows offline editing and later synchronization and merging at the paragraph level. This makes it a useful tool for workgroups that collaborate on research whose members are not always online. Better still, OneNote is designed as a collaborative tool and allows more than one person to work on the same page at the same time making it a shared whiteboard tool as well.OneNote was originally marketed by Microsoft as a companion to Tablet PCs and it has excellent support for pen interfaces as noted above. However, many people have recognized its use as a general notetaking platform and it is widely used in education by both students and teachers.

It has been the most widely used, and still most widely used web browser to the present day, until today, since 1999, attaining a peak of about 95 usage share during 2002 and 2003 with IE5 and IE6. It has been alleged that Internet Explorer's share would have been lower if it was not bundled with Windows. That percentage share has since declined in the face of renewed competition from other web browsers " Mozilla Firefox most of all. Microsoft spent over 100 million a year on IE in the late 1990s, with over 1,000 people working on it by 1999.The latest release is version Internet Explorer 8, which is available as a free update for Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or later, Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 or later, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008, and is planned for inclusion with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.Up until Internet Explorer 7, the IE logo was a blue 'e' with a matching blue ring around it. For more information, see Set up a new connection.HyperTerminal records the messages passed to and from the computer or service on the other end of your connection. Therefore, it can serve as a valuable troubleshooting tool when setting up and using your modem. To make sure that your modem is connected properly or to view your modem's settings, you can send commands through HyperTerminal and check the results. HyperTerminal has scroll functionality that allows you to look at received text that has scrolled off the screen. You can use HyperTerminal to transfer large files from a computer onto your portable computer using a serial port rather than going through the process of setting up your portable computer on a network. For more information, see Send a file to a remote computer. You can use HyperTerminal to help debug source code from a remote terminal. You can also use HyperTerminal to communicate with older characterbased computers.HyperTerminal is designed to be an easytouse tool and is not meant to replace other fullfeature tools available on the market. You can use HyperTerminal to perform the specific tasks described above, but do not attempt to use HyperTerminal for more complex communication needs. Software developers and data architects can use it to develop application software and nonprogrammer power users can use it to build simple applications. It supports some objectoriented techniques but falls short of being a fully objectoriented development tool.Microsoft Access is part of the Microsoft Office suite and is the most popular Windows desktop database application. LimeWire is a free peertopeer file sharing P2P client for the Java platform, which uses the Gnutella network to locate files as well as share files. It also has limited BitTorrent support. A freeware version and a purchasable enhanced version are available.Written in the Java programming language, LimeWire is able to run on any computer with Java Virtual Machine installed. Installers are provided for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. Support for Mac OS 9 and other previous versions was dropped with the release of LimeWire 4.0.10. From version 4.8 onwards, LimeWire works as a UPnP Internet Gateway Device controller in that it can automatically set up packetforwarding rules with UPnPcapable routers.LimeWire offers the sharing of its library through the Digital Audio Access Protocol DAAP. As such when LimeWire is running and configured to allow it, any files shared will be detectable and downloaded on the local network by DAAPenabled devices e.g., iTunes, Zune.

Guitar Pro

Guitar Pro is a tabbing program for Windows and Mac OS X. It is made by the French company Arobas Music. The software makes use of multiple instrument tracks which follow standard staff notation, but also shows the notes on tablature notation. It gives the musician visual access to keys banjos, etc. for the song to be composed, and allows live previews of the notes to be played at a specified tempo. It allows for certain tracks to be muted and provides dynamic control over the volume, phasing and other aspects of each track. Included in version 4 onwards is a keyboard that allows pianists to add their part to a composition.Guitar Pro outputs sound by means of a library andor, as of version 5, the Realistic Sound Engine which uses high quality recorded samples for a more realistic playback. By using its live preview feature musicians may play along with the song, following the tablature played in real time.Files composed using Guitar Pro are recorded in the GP5, GP4 and GP3 format, corresponding to versions 5, 4, and 3 of the software. Such files are available for free on several websites, including songs of both underground and popular bands. However, copyright issues raised by the Music Publishers' Association MPA pressured some of these sites to close. Note that different versions of the file format are not backwards compatible. For example, Guitar Pro 4 cannot open GP5 files created by Guitar Pro 5, but prompts the user to upgrade their software to a newer version.Guitar Pro is a software meant to help musicians and aspiring musicians to compose, transcribe, edit and study music. It also helps the sharing of compositions among groups of people and other musicians.Guitar Pro 5 is also well suited for classical music study and composing. Prior to version 4, it wasn't possible to remove the tablature from the screen or printout, making it a little confusing for classicallytrained musicians to edit standard notation scores and impossible to achieve printouts without the tablature notation. This limitation has been lifted as of version 5 and many improvements to standard notation and printout quality introduced.

Fort Agent is an email and Usenet news client used on the Windows operating system. Agent was conceived, designed and developed by Mark Sidell and the team at Fort Internet Software in 1994 to address the need for an onlineoffline newsreader which capitalized on the emerging Windows GUI framework. By 1995 Agent had expanded to become a fullfeatured email client and remains a widelyused application for integrating news and email communication on Windows.Agent's Usenet features include access to multiple news servers, importexport of NZB files, threaded discussions and a highly configurable user interface. It has long supported yEnc as well as many other coding schemes, and has the capability of joining incomplete binary attachments, which is useful in the event of posting errors.Agent email introduced the concept of route by identity, a simple draganddrop way to train Agent to route incoming email. Together with builtin Bayesian junk detection, route by identity provides nearly 100 accurate spam filtering.

High quality fonts in the PostScript format could be developed for a fraction of the cost of all other existing methods URW's Ikarus required systems costing over 100,000, leading to what has been called the democratization of type design for the first time in history, numerous selftaught type designers without substantial capital investment produced fonts for professional use.In January 1995, Altsys was acquired by Macromedia. A new version of Fontographer was included in the Macromedia Graphics Suite, which helped its wider adoption. Although development of the font editor was frozen since 1998, when version 4.1 was released, many font and graphics designers continued to use it. The only serious competitor at the time, FontLab, was generally considered more difficult to use.RoboFog was a version of Fontographer 3.5 with an embedded Python interpreter, developed by Just van Rossum, Petr van Blokland and Erik van Blokland.

Adobe Flash previously called Macromedia Flash is a multimedia platform originally acquired by Macromedia and currently developed and distributed by Adobe Systems. Since its introduction in 1996, Flash has become a popular method for adding animation and interactivity to web pages. Flash is commonly used to create animation, advertisements, and various web page components, to integrate video into web pages, and more recently, to develop rich Internet applications.Flash can manipulate vector and raster graphics and supports bidirectional streaming of audio and video. It contains a scripting language called ActionScript. Several software products, systems, and devices are able to create or display Flash content, including Adobe Flash Player, which is available free for most common web browsers, some mobile phones and for other electronic devices using Flash Lite. The Adobe Flash Professional multimedia authoring program is used to create content for the Adobe Engagement Platform, such as web applications, games and movies, and content for mobile phones and other embedded devices.Files in the SWF format, traditionally called ShockWave Flash movies, Flash movies or Flash games, usually have a .swf file extension and may be an object of a web page, strictly played in a standalone Flash Player, or incorporated into a Projector, a selfexecuting Flash movie with the .exe extension in Microsoft Windows or .hqx for Macintosh. Flash Video files have a .flv file extension and are either used from within .swf files or played through a flv aware player, such as VLC, or QuickTime and Windows Media Player with external codecs added.

DVD Shrink is a freeware program for Microsoft Windows that facilitates backing up DVD movies. As commerciallyreleased video DVDs are typically dual layer 8.5 GB, one of DVD Shrink's functions is to reencode the movie in lesser quality andor discard extra content such as foreignlanguage soundtracks so as to fit on a single layer 4.7 GB DVD.DVD Shrink is a freeware DVD transcoder focused on ease of use. The application is contained within a single executable file that is a mere 1 megabyte in size. The program features a decryption algorithm and a VBR encoder, and the user is also able to choose how the compression is to be distributed across the DVD. DVD Shrink can automatically recompress video, to as little as 39 of its original size, depending on the aspect ratio of the original DVD with a corresponding loss in quality to allow it to fit on a standard DVDRW, a DualLayer DVDR, or any userdefined custom size. When Deep Analysis and Adaptive Error Compensation options are selected, the quality of the resulting DVD is increased. These options are timeconsuming because DVD Shrink runs through the DVD once doing the analysis, and then again doing the encoding. During the encoding it decodes, decompresses, recompresses and recodes the video.

It is the current and primary market leader for commercial bitmap and image manipulation, and is the flagship product of Adobe Systems. It has been described as an industry standard for graphics professionals and was one of the early killer applications on the PC.Adobe's 2005 Creative Suite rebranding led to Adobe Photoshop 8's renaming to Adobe Photoshop CS. Thus, Adobe Photoshop CS4 is the 11th major release of Adobe Photoshop. The CS rebranding also resulted in Adobe offering numerous software packages containing multiple Adobe programs for a reduced price. Adobe Photoshop is included in most of Adobe's Creative Suite offerings.Photoshop's popularity, combined with its high retail price, makes Photoshop's piracy rate relatively high. Adobe countered by including SafeCast DRM starting with Adobe Photoshop CS.

Adobe Photoshop Elements is the consumer version of the Adobe Photoshop raster image editing product, sold at a fraction roughly 16th of the cost of the professional product. It contains most of the features of the professional version but with fewer and simpler options. The program allows users to create, edit, organize and share images, all from the same product.Originally introduced alongside Photoshop version 7, Photoshop Elements targets photography enthusiasts and thus lacks many features that make it useful in a proper print production environment. For example, Photoshop Elements cannot export files in the CMYK color mode, supports a simplified color management system, and excludes detailed softproofing. It also either eliminates completely or offers simplified versions of some of the more powerful plugins, along with a number of features aimed at nonexperts such as removing the redeye effect or changing the skin tone in a picture. An example of a redesigned feature would be the Variations correction dialog. Some versions can, however, open, edit, and save PDFs.Photoshop LE Limited Edition was Adobe's consumer raster image editing product prior to the introduction of Elements. Photoshop LE had similar limitations to Elements.

PageMaker was the first desktop publishing program, introduced in 1985 by Aldus Corporation, initially for the thennew Apple Macintosh but soon after also for PCs running the thennew Microsoft Windows. PageMaker was awarded an SPA Excellence in Software Award for Best New Use of a Computer in 1986.As an application relying on a graphical user interface, PageMaker helped to popularize the Macintosh platform and the Windows environment. Early releases of the Windows version were shipped with a runtime copy of Windows with no taskswitching capabilities to enable users who did not have Windows installed to run the application from MSDOS.Version 3.01 was available for OS2 and took extensive advantage of multithreading for improved user responsiveness.PageMaker relies on Adobe Systems' PostScript page description language, and in 1994 Adobe Systems acquired Aldus and PageMaker. The last version is PageMaker 7.0, released July 9, 2001, though updates have been released for the two supported platforms since. In 2004, Adobe announced that development for Adobe PageMaker had ceased but that Adobe would continue to sell and support it. InDesign is presented as the successor product, with upgrades from PageMaker to InDesign offered. The Macintosh version runs only in Mac OS 9 or earlier there is no native support for Mac OS X, and it does not run at all on Intelbased Macintoshes. It does not run well under Classic, and Adobe recommends customers use an older Macintosh capable of booting into Mac OS 9. The Windows version supports Windows XP, but according to Adobe, it does not install or run on Windows Vista. However, PageMaker 6.5 will install and run on Windows Vista.
