I need to upgrade my computer. I have only 30gig and am constantly running out of room and burning onto cd.
So what do you guys think of the following approx specs:

250 gig HD
2 gig ddr ram
512mb graphics
dvd RW
3 1/2 disk reader
multiple memory card reader thing

I have no idea on the motherboard or if I should get a dual core processor or just 'normal'? processor. Or AMD or intel. Any help in the new Orbital Desktop would help.

I personally like the 500gb drives wink...

sounds good, though floppies are worthless now wink

I say an AMD processor, prices will vary; lemme dig up my specs i drew up

AM2 system is what i'd recommend.

Motherboard
AMD Dual Core 2.2ghz Processor
500gb HD

mmm, crispy...

Motherboard
"And with NVIDIA SLI technology, you can potentially double your graphics horsepower with 2 identical NVIDIA GeForce graphics cards!" I like the sound of that. It has one IDE channel, what are IDE channels used for?

Processor
AMD vs Intel, do we have a disscussion about this topic here somewhere? I get the feeling the conclusion would be on the lines of "But AMD is cheaper"?. I like the sound of dual core, yet its 2.2ghz and I have seen processors at 2.6ghz.

500gb
lol meh why not.. I was thinking 900gb at one stage. A comment on newegg mentioned heating. I think I might need extra fans. Meanwhile I need to read some more.

Gizmo have you ordered from newegg before?

I will be using this comp for a bit of everything, but my current desktop is in its 5th year and Im thinking I get the best I can so it lasts 5 years too.

IDE is a dying technology, SATA is much faster.

You know the flat ribbon cable that connects your hard drives? Each IDE channel can support 2 hard drives (or CDRW's).

Basically, it's only good for use on cdrw/dvd drives; i'd go with 2 dvdrw's (only like $30 or so each) and then a couple of SATA hard drives.

lol we have a lot of discussions, it's in the eyes of the beholder; I myself like the AMD's because more manufacturers build better tech for them; this is the best motherboard for the money, and it supports a dual core amd processor which is quite affordable.

lol buy 2 500gb hard drives, they'd probably still be less in cost to the one 750+ gb hard drive.

Yes, I am ordering from NewEgg constantly; low prices, great reviews on both services and they list customer reviews on products.

I cant find an international mailing system. I want to order shipments to Australia. Hopefully they do that. Ill check it out later, right now Im watching that new series here called Heroes. Thanks for the help.

lol new? it's been on for a while here in the US wink...

And I'm not sure, I'm in the US and they have a shipping centre in the next state (Cali).
Posted By: Artic Warrior Re: New desktop - 03/03/07 04:05 AM
Newegg doesn't ship internationally (excet to Puerto Rico), so I was thinking I would order the parts from dealers within Aus. When I cite the names of your reccomendations, what short version of the name should I give. Like would the motherboard be: NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard?

I figured that your suggestions would be much better then the ones I would get from retail.
Posted By: Gremelin Re: New desktop - 03/03/07 04:22 AM
puerto rico is a us territory, so no suprise there lol...

just print out what youw ant and bring it to them; I bet it'll be more expensive though from them, you know, being in BFE and all lol
Posted By: Artic Warrior Re: New desktop - 03/03/07 01:50 PM
What is BFE? I googled it and found bum freak egypt. Which Im not familiar with. But I will go over to the store on monday and check out the prices and tell you guys.

Bum [censored], Egypt

thats so strange, I wonder how that originated. I think Australia is gonna be ok in price range, since everything is "made in tawain".
Posted By: Gremelin Re: New desktop - 03/04/07 05:41 AM
Just because it's made about the same distance means nothing; US recieves discounts because:
A. It's designed here.
B. We order a SHITLOAD to cover the various regions.

Wheras you have Austrailia, which, no offense, is much smaller and has had less experiance screwing with the technology wink...

Not to mention, I use newegg due to the prices, at most other places, that $150 500gb hard drive would be $300+

Here are the final specs. What do you guys think? Still not sure on the mobo so I put two options. I think for some reason I will end up gng for the 256ddr3 graphics instead of 512ddr2. What would you guys do?

Posted By: Artic Warrior Re: New desktop - 07/07/07 05:25 AM
I need a monitor. I saw one with DVI Contrast of 2000:1 19", but what is DVI contrast and is it good? The ratio is more then double of the others.
The other ones seem to all be around 700:1 contrast ratio.
I just want a good monitor since they can be so expensive. I was thinking about going with LG 19" non wide screen.
Posted By: Gremelin Re: New desktop - 07/07/07 02:43 PM
I like the widescreen monitors myself, it's all up to personal choice; and DVI are much higher quality than DSUB...

In regards to the DVI Contrast Ratio, I believe that the higher the better...
