I think this should help keep prot alive. What is a protocol?

An agreement. A protocol is an agreement on how something should be run. Everyone agress that TCP/IP will act in a certain manor so that everyone can program everything to work together.

A protocol is a set of rules for a specific pourpose. They decide how the data packet will be broke up and what each 1 and 0 is there for. Some protocols are simplY in place to assist other protocols.

Usaly a protocol decide how a header and or trailer of a packet will be set up. The center (payload) is the data you want(MOST OF THE TIME). ATM for example is broke down into octets. an octet is 53 bits or bytes I forget now. Anyway the Payload is all the back end. All the over head is in the header.

They are also a set of rules that state how that packet is to be handled and by what, and on what level of the OSI modle they will be handled.

Those posters cover many different protocol stacks and thier relation to the OSI modle. If you have a idea about the OSI mode and TCP/IP before you get it you can learn a ton from them. I wrote a couple tuts on the OSI modle and TCP/IP a while back.

first one is kinda the basics of the OSI modle, second starts to break TCP/IP's protocol stack up acorrding to the OSI modle. Pretty basic stuff, but if you are completly new it helps. If the posters look like russian, then these tuts will help out a bit.

I know a little about protocols as I deal with lower level protocols everyday. Basicaly layer 1, 2, and half way up layer 3, for the OSI modle.

Little not guys, TCP/IP is just one of MANY protocol stacks out there.

i learned about the OSI model and TCP/IP shits long time ago.. there was times i was bored with em but usually it's funn, coz as you said there are tons of stuff to learn there if you want.

I like the layers thing, it helped me a lot to undestand how the whole things go especially data flow and so on, these are very very interesting things and i never get bored reading em.

Protocol
