i discovered just a few days ago that the net use and nbtstat didn't work in the schools system. is this because of the admin closed the option to do this? or what is it?

What do you mean by didnt work?
Errored out? What error? Where did you run it from? What system are they running? What type of network is setup?

It's probably because these commands are not available on Win95 (and Win98 ?) and some systems are on it. Well, at my school they run Win95 so...

Or are we back to the age old issue that the Client for Microsoft Networks must be installed? There's several topics around (mostly in the Windows Security forum) about this issue.
