What is everyone's favourite hacking film, if any, be it 'War Games' , 'C-64 Cracks, Tools & Demos' all the way to Defcon movies like 'Hacks', just post your favourite (if any), it'll be interesing to find out wheather or not anyone actually watches any hacking films.

Sneakers.
Posted By: sinetific Re: The Best 'hacking' film: - 06/14/05 04:49 AM
I wouldn't nessacarily call sneakers a hacking film. Really they are more burglars than hackers breaking into banks, corporations and stealing [censored], etc. I mean there is a hacker in their group to round out thier arsenal, but that would be like calling ocean's eleven (the recent version) a hacking movie because one of the characters used was a 'hacker'.

Do we really consider any movie where people use computers to commint crimes "hacking" movies because there are so few out there we feel the need to claim anything bearing a slight resemblence as our own? To tell you the truth I couldn't find anything more boring than watching someone else "hack" for the length of a feature film.

Anyways my favorite 'hacking' movie has to be "Office Space". It's a hacker movie. They make a virus for Godsakes! A VIRUS! If that's not hacking I don't know what is....</sarcasm?>

i concur.
Hackers has got to be the greatest Hackers movie of all times.
its got quotes from the 'Hackers Manifesto', old-school phone phreaking off payphones and restricted lines but most importantly, as IceMyst as so RIGHTLY pointed out...

you get to see Angelina Jolie's titties laugh
Posted By: ErrOr404 Re: The Best 'hacking' film: - 06/14/05 05:08 PM
Yes, its perhaps a bit chliched now, but I agree that Hackers has to be the best 'hacking' film ever, I love the Hacker's Manifesto themed content, as endgame said,:

How old was 'jolie then anyway?
Posted By: Gremelin Re: The Best 'hacking' film: - 06/15/05 12:14 AM
Well, Hackers was made in 1995, and she was born in 1975, and it's 2005... So she was 20.
Posted By: xacex Re: The Best 'hacking' film: - 06/15/05 01:21 AM
Um sin. Sneakers was about two hackers, one of which got caught because of the other. And the main plot is of that little blackbox of magic that can unencrypt anything. ANYTHING. The main guys have to first get the box, then they have to take it back to ensure that it doesn't fall into the wrong hands (which in this movie is the Russian government)

the movie deals with social engineering, hacking, and all sorts of hacking related topics.

For you to say that the movie isn't a hacking movie is retarded.
Posted By: Artic Warrior Re: The Best 'hacking' film: - 06/15/05 07:58 PM
Hackers. Havent seen too many others unless they are like sneakers and oceans 11/12 to answer your Q on whether some people watch hacker movies. Oh and one called STAT or something but it too was like one of the ones that had a hacker in it. I think STAT was/is what americans have instead of HSC like here and they try and steal the questions.
BUT if a hacker movie came out today (and had reasonable actors/actress then I would probably watch it).
Posted By: Abnormality Re: The Best 'hacking' film: - 06/15/05 09:15 PM
War Games is a clasic, love that one.
Hackers 2 was good too.

I remember liking hackers when I first saw it, tried to watch it the other day...now that movie is just wackie
Posted By: Gremelin Re: The Best 'hacking' film: - 06/15/05 10:55 PM
Real Genius (1985) wink ... If you could classify that as a "hacking" film, it's more of a Geek film however, but then again it all depends on ones definition of "hacker"...
Posted By: xacex Re: The Best 'hacking' film: - 06/16/05 12:21 AM
I always thought Operation Takedown was a bit too one-sided for my tastes. I take parts of it, and parts of Freedom Downtime and try to get the non-biased story from it.

And it was never the official Hackers 2. People just coined it that. laugh

and I know this because I am the all time movie database person. bahha.

New favorite "hacking" film, "Mr and Mrs Smith"... Granted it's more of an asassin film but comeon, they did hijack a power grid...
Posted By: Artic Warrior Re: The Best 'hacking' film: - 06/16/05 02:03 PM
I totally forgot about Sword Fish. That movie rocked! Especially since you got to see Halle Berrys tits :p
Mr and Mrs isnt out here in Auz yet but its going to be good. Anything with Jolie is good.
Also I loved the story behind the Matrix. That in my definition is definitly a hacking movie just less computer based and more plugged. If that made sence.
Posted By: Gremelin Re: The Best 'hacking' film: - 06/16/05 09:35 PM
You'll LOVE Mr. and Mrs. Smith lol... It looks like a "bang bang shoot 'em up" film; but it's really more of a commedy if anything...

Mr. and Mrs. Smith is out mate, Also Madagascar is a great hacking movie to! Honestly go see Madagascar, you will think its a kids Movie but its really really funny!
Posted By: EndGame Re: The Best 'hacking' film: - 06/17/05 10:29 AM
madagascar hacking?!
wtf?!
its about a bunch of animated animals being deported to another country.

swordfish was redeeming in the fact that its main character was arrested initially due to the 'karnivore' program developed by the FBI
(coincidently, the movie was out 2years after the leaking of the existence of karnivore to the public. The first time i had actually heard of karnivore was on the news section on UGN)

and lastly...
anyone know the name of that song in Mr. and Mrs. Smith? the one played when they were dancing in the rain in the begining and at the final showdown in the end?

Johnny Mnemonic was pretty good hacking movie, at least back in 1995. Maybe a bit too sci-fi but ... oh well ...

Oh and another one that has missed us is Entrapment with *melt* Zeta Jones.

I hate hacking movies. At least everyone I have seen. The make sure to cram in as many "h4ck3r w0rd2" as possible. Sword fish is a perfect example. Ole boy is getting a bj while cracking the DOJ net. After that, John Travolta is asking him how he did it. Listen to how he crams the buz words in there.

The font on the PC's is allway something like 55px. Some of what they show is about as realistic as sending 10 emails to your friends and seeing the taco bell dog run across your screen. The only good point is usally the hacker is the good guy. Why not make a realistic hacker movie. There is enough out there to OMG base one off a real persons life events. Say

The list goes on. We can't make a movie on the true life events of one of these guys. Not a flash in the pan movie, I mean a full hollywood production with decent actors so I belive it. No lets show some Matrix with a 3d hologram floating around like in hackers in the early 90's. Where the chief of IT security likes to ride around on a skate board. WTF is that [censored].

The matrix, good movie. Loaded with bull [censored]
Sword fish Bull [censored]
Hackers, loads of bull [censored]
war games okay I like it, but still bull [censored]

mm, I agree with you a bit there, but I don't think that accuracy is something that the people who made the movie were looking for- what I mean is, thats not the point, I mean its the closest thing we can get to movies that are about our society. One thing I don't like about them though is that they give the public a really bad impression of how h4cking works.
Posted By: §intå× Re: The Best 'hacking' film: - 06/18/05 02:39 AM
Here is what I am saying. I get that you need to entertain people. I get that a movie about a guy reading and sitting at a computer the whole movie would pretty much suck. But there are wild crazy real life stories that would lend them selves perfectly to a big screen. Why just make up some bull [censored] that could never work in the real world when you have the real deal.

A big trend in hollywood now is accuracey for time periods. When they do that with computer movies I will enjoy them a bit more. Though I do like Angelina Jolie's titties

Man Steve Wozniak is one hairy dude. Also movies are about fantasy, why would you go a watch real-life stuff when you can live it? its like that big brother crap, all they do is sit around a couch and talk, thats the stuff you do with your friends and family, so why would you want to watch it? If you want accuracy watch doco's.

Pirates of Silicon Valley NIGGA

It's about the period when Apple came out with their graphical OS, and then MS jewed it. Pretty good movie.

There's also some pimp [censored] movie where these two kids are going to Stanford, and one gets a job for the huge evil MS-esque corporation. This kid's like a genius, but somehow the company's coming out with all kinds of pimp [censored] code from nowhere. Turns out they're finding these badass open source coders, ganking their code, and then beating their heads in. This kid's best friend dies, so he decides to wtf_pwn the company. Wish I could remember what it's called, but it's a pimp show.

Well for me that definatly must be hackers. Yeah yeah not for the flashy bs hacking etc.

But the music in that movie is just awsome (especially their opening theme).

And further it just shows how the real world (and with that i mean in real life) looks upon hackers. Hackers treated like criminals, making them look plain evil.
The name "hacker" should be a good thing, oh well that's why i don't even want to be associated with that word ever again.

That's why i love the movie.

I would really love to see a good hacker movie with a story on the lines of hackers around the world uniting together in an attempt to do something. Like when NATO bombed the chinese embassy in belgrade? and 20k chinese tried to crash certain american .gov sites.
Or like a movie on cyber terrorism.

and it should have some hot actresses. that also know how to act. and a cool asian guy! and a pissed of president...
