Linux runs on a variety of computers and devices, and is widely supported by systems created in the last 20 years. It runs on PDA's, Gaming Systems, and even novelty watches. It can also run on systems as large as mainframes. There are Linux distributions tailored specifically for various devices, all one need do is seek information.Linux was written originally for Intel processor based PC's, using the hardware facilities of the 80386 processor and its successors to implement its features. The 80386 family includes the 80486 and all of the Pentium chips. However, there are now many ports to other hardware platforms.

What Is Unix?

Unix officially trademarked as UNIX, sometimes also written as Unix with small caps is a computer operating system originally developed in 1969 by a group of ATT employees at Bell Labs, including Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, Douglas McIlroy, and Joe Ossanna. Today's Unix systems are split into various branches, developed over time by ATT as well as various commercial vendors and nonprofit organizations. As of 2007, the owner of the trademark is The Open Group, an industry standards consortium. Only systems fully compliant with and certified to the Single UNIX Specification are qualified to use the trademark others are called Unix systemlike or Unixlike.During the late 1970s and early 1980s, the influence of Unix in academic circles led to largescale adoption of Unix particularly of the BSD variant, originating from the University of California, Berkeley by commercial startups, the most notable of which are Solaris, HPUX and AIX. Today, in addition to certified Unix systems such as those already mentioned, Unixlike operating systems such as Linux and BSD are commonly encountered. Sometimes, traditional Unix may be used to describe a Unix or an operating system that has the characteristics of either Version 7 Unix or UNIX System V.Unix operating systems are widely used in both servers and workstations. The Unix environment and the clientserver program model were essential elements in the development of the Internet and the reshaping of computing as centered in networks rather than in individual computers. Both Unix and the C programming language were developed by ATT and distributed to government and academic institutions, causing both to be ported to a wider variety of machine families than any other operating system. As a result, Unix became synonymous with open systems.Unix was designed to be portable, multitasking and multiuser in a timesharing configuration. Unix systems are characterized by various concepts the use of plain text for storing data a hierarchical file system treating devices and certain types of interprocess communication IPC as files and the use of a large number of software tools, small programs that can be strung together through a command line interpreter using pipes, as opposed to using a single monolithic program that includes all of the same functionality. These concepts are known as the Unix philosophy.Under Unix, the operating system consists of many of these utilities along with the master control program, the kernel. The kernel provides services to start and stop programs, handle the file system and other common low level tasks that most programs share, and, perhaps most importantly, schedules access to hardware to avoid conflicts if two programs try to access the same resource or device simultaneously. To mediate such access, the kernel was given special rights on the system, leading to the division between userspace and kernelspace. The microkernel concept was introduced in an effort to reverse the trend towards larger kernels and return to a system in which most tasks were completed by smaller utilities. In an era when a normal computer consisted of a hard disk for storage and a data terminal for input and output IO, the Unix file model worked quite well as most IO was linear. However, modern systems include networking and other new devices. As graphical user interfaces developed, the file model proved inadequate to the task of handling asynchronous events such as those generated by a mouse, and in the 1980s nonblocking IO and the set of interprocess communication mechanisms was augmented sockets, shared memory, message queues, semaphores, and functionalities such as network protocols were moved out of the kernel.

What Is Linux?

Linux is a generic term referring to Unixlike computer operating systems based on the Linux kernel. Their development is one of the most prominent examples of free and open source software collaboration typically all the underlying source code can be used, freely modified, and redistributed by anyone under the terms of the GNU GPL and other free licenses.Linux is predominantly known for its use in servers, although it is installed on a wide variety of computer hardware, ranging from embedded devices and mobile phones to supercomputers. Linux distributions, installed on both desktop and laptop computers, have become increasingly commonplace in recent years, owing largely to the popular Ubuntu distribution and to the emergence of netbooks. The name Linux comes from the Linux kernel, originally written in 1991 by Linus Torvalds. The rest of the system usually comprises components such as the Apache HTTP Server, the X Window System, the K Desktop Environment, and utilities and libraries from the GNU operating system announced in 1983 by Richard Stallman. Commonlyused applications with desktop Linux systems include the Mozilla Firefox webbrowser and the OpenOffice.org office application suite. The GNU contribution is the basis for the Free Software Foundation's preferred name GNULinux.

What Is BSD?

Berkeley Software Distribution BSD, sometimes called Berkeley Unix is the UNIX operating system derivative developed and distributed by the Computer Systems Research Group of the University of California, Berkeley, from 1977 to 1995.Historically, BSD has been considered a branch of UNIX BSD UNIX, because it shared the initial codebase and design with the original ATT UNIX operating system. In the 1980s, BSD was widely adopted by vendors of workstationclass systems in the form of proprietary UNIX variants such as DEC ULTRIX and Sun Microsystems SunOS. This can be attributed to the ease with which it could be licensed, and the familiarity it found among the founders of many technology companies of this era.Though these commercial BSD derivatives were largely superseded by the UNIX System V Release 4 and OSF1 systems in the 1990s both of which incorporated BSD code, later BSD releases provided a basis for several open source development projects which continue to this day.Today, the term of BSD is often nonspecifically used to refer to any of these BSD descendants, e.g. FreeBSD, NetBSD or OpenBSD, which together form a branch of the family of Unixlike operating systems.

Linux is licensed on the GNU General Public License. The licenses of the utilities and programs which come with the installations vary. Much of the code is from the GNU Project at the Free Software Foundation, and is also under the GPL. Some other major programs often included in Linux distributions are under a BSD license and other similar licenses. You can view various Open Source Licenses at The Open Source Initiative.

Once you obtain a distribution, it will contain instructions on installation. Each distribution has its own installation program.Generally, once you've downloaded your distribution and burnt it to CD or DVD or purchased a disk with the distribution you intend to use you'll insert the disk into your computer and boot or reboot it.As long as your system is configured to boot from the CDRomDVDRom drive in your system, it should boot to your distribution's setup program to begin configuration. If your system does not boot to the disk, please see the My system won't boot to a CD or DVD Troubleshooting FAQ Entry. From here you'll proceed through the configuration screens to tailor your system to your needs and local, it should be pretty straight forward in most cases.

How Do I Get Started with Linux?

If you are new to Linux, you should start by buying or downloading a generalpurpose Linux distribution. A distribution is a complete operating system, including the Linux kernel and all the utilities and software you are likely to need, ready to install and use. Most distributions include thousands of software packages, including userfriendly desktops, office suites, and games. There are a handful of major Linux distributions, and as a beginner you are probably safer using one of them. For information about them, and how they are installed, see the DistributionsHOWTO from the Linux Documentation Project. Before you select which distribution you want to try, read their descriptions carefully and compare them to your needs. Each distribution is tailored to a particular type of user. Some are optimized to function as servers, some are optimized for gaming, and some are optimized for desktop and office use. There are a few distributions which are considered to be outstanding choices for new users Red Hat and CentOS are good solutions for Server Systems. Ubuntu, Mandrake, and SuSE are good solutions for Desktop Systems.

Can Linux Run Microsoft Windows Programs?

We at The GoNix Initiative have a large list of Linux Alternatives to Windows Software so you can find native Linux replacements to expensive, preparatory Windows titles but if you insist on running Windows programs within Linux we recommend WINEWine is a free software application that aims to allow Unixlike computer operating systems on the x86 or x8664 architecture to execute programs written for Microsoft Windows. Wine also provides a software library known as Winelib against which developers can compile Windows applications to help port them to Unixlike systems.Wine implements the Windows API entirely in userspace, rather than as a kernel module at the time of writing. Services normally provided by the kernel in Windows are provided by a daemon known as wineserver. Wineserver implements basic Windows functionality, as well as providing extra functions such as X Window integration and translation of signals into native Windows exceptions.Although Wine implements some aspects of the Windows kernel, it is not possible to use native Windows drivers with it, due to Wine's underlying architecture. This prevents certain applications from working, such as some copyprotected titles. As of 2009, Wine runs some software packages with good stability and many others with minor issues. The developers of the Direct3D portions of Wine have continued to implement new features such as pixel shaders to increase game support. Wine can also use native DLLs directly, thus increasing functionality, but then a license for Windows is needed unless the DLLs were distributed with the application itself.

Generally this means that the CDRom or DVD Drive in your computer is set to boot after the hard disk this will cause a problem as usually you'll be installing Linux over a system that already has an operating system on the hard drive, so you'll need to change the setting in the BIOS.A setting in the BIOS configuration for your motherboard holds which devices should have a priority above all others, this will be unique to your system and accessing the BIOS will be unique to your motherboards settings. This setting is generally labeled as Boot Priority, Boot Preference, or Boot Order, and you'll want to select DVD or CDRom as your highest priority, followed by your Hard Drive. You can find how to enter your BIOS configuration by reading the manual that came with your Motherboard or Computer, or accessing the manual online by viewing your Motherboard or Computer Manufacturer's webpage.

We don't allow HTML markup in articles or archive entries, instead we use what has commonly become known as BBCode UBBCode. Most HTML tags will be converted to BBCode upon content submission, however, as more and more sites begin supporting BBCode you might just find yourself falling into the simplicity of it allOur BBCode has been factored to be w3c xHTML compliant. The BBCode start and end tags must be within brackets . Also, you must ensure you nest your BBCode properly or it will not be parsed properly Proper Nesting TagAHello TagBTagCeverybodyTagCTagB!TagA Improper Nesting TagAHello TagBTagCeverybodyTagBTagC!TagAPlease note that we recommend against using BBCodes which will skew the standard view of the site, we will however make exceptions.

There are many aspects in becoming a Hacker, Cracker, or Coder Your first step is to learn how things work, the best way to exploit anything is knowing the in's and outs UGN Security recommends that everyone learn how certain things work dependant on what you're wanting to doFor example If you're wanting to hack websites we recommend researching web languages PHPMySQL, Perl, etc. If you're wanting to learn how to exploit windows or other operating systems we recommend that you read up on desktop programming such as C, Visual Basic, etc.By learning some types of programming you're making strides in learning other languages as well as most languages tie into, and have a likeness of, other languages. For example, by learning PHP you'll likely be able to pickup Perl and C easier than by not having any experience.

Try stripping out all of the components except for the vital ones the CPU, the RAM and the video card. If your computer POSTS, add components back in one at a time until you can isolate the problem. Then the check the manufacturer's website for possible fixes or tips on getting their product to work. If you can't find anything, send their tech support an email, and consider RMA'ing the product. If you still can't get the computer to work, then one of your vital components is at fault. Swap these components with other, knowngood components onebyone until you can isolate the problem. If swapping knowngood parts in makes no difference either, it's very likely that you've got a dead motherboard. Send it back to the manufacturer.Failing all this, post here and we'll do our best to help you.

It may already be on if you get a UsernamePassword prompt whenever you boot up Windows. If so, you probably just set your password to null so you could just hit enter.Add that username with a null password to the Windows 2000 box and you won't get prompted for a password. Or, add the username with whatever password you have set up.You could also do the following1. On the computer running Windows 2000, rightclick My Network Places, and then click Properties.2. Rightclick the direct cable connection, and then click Properties.3. On the Security tab, click Advanced, and then click Settings.4. Click to select the Allow older MSCHAP version for Windows 95 Servers check box, click OK, and then click OK.5. Choose maximized.IE should also stay the same size as the last IE window you closed, so you can also open up one instance of IE, maximize it, close it, and open IE again. It should now be maximized. You can also open an instance, resize it to the size you want, hold down alt, and then close the window. When you open it, it should be the size you had it set to previously.

It depends what you're going to do with it. You'll need an OS that will support dual processing, which means Windows NT 4, Windows 2000, Windows XP except for Home Edition or Linux most flavours support SMP, but check the documentation to be sure.To get the most benefit out of it, check that the applications you intend to run also have support for SMP. Running nonoptimised applications 99.9 of games have no support for SMP, for example will give you almost no benefit, and the cost of buying an SMP motherboard and two processors is quite considerable. If your application does support SMP, however, you can see quite an impressive performance boost, although nowhere near double the performance of a singleprocessor system.

LCD screens don't refresh in the same way as CRT monitors. In a CRT, the phosphor screen is scanned a certain number of times per second, causing it to glow. If this number is too low, then the time between scans causes the screen to flicker. LCD screens don't do this the individual pixels change color when necessary. You will never observe flicker on an LCD screen, so the concept of refresh rate is almost irrelevant. What is relevant is the speed at which the pixels can erase. If it is too slow, you may see a 'ghosting' effect in highmovement situations like computer games or action films. Most modern LCDs have a very fast erase time, but you may occasionally still encounter this problem.Pixel erase time is most commonly called pixel refresh rate. It is measured by a rise and fall in milliseconds ms. Most manufacturers list the rating as a combination of rise and fall speeds, but sometimes only one way is listed.

RAID is an acronym for Redundant Array of Independent Disks. There are two popular types but not the only types of RAID, one is striping and the other is mirroring. Striping speeds up your hard drives and combines the drive space into one large virtual drive. Mirroring is for backup purposes and creates an exact mirror of a hard drive.

When in the filter settings window of TMPGEnc, choose source range. From here, you can set start and stop frames for each section of the video. For a two hour movie 120 minutes, you will need 2 VCDs or 3 SVCDs so select the end frame either somewhere in the middle, or about a third into it. Once you've set a start and stop frame, you can press OK to get back to the filter settings window. Press next to see how much of the CD you have filled.

The most common way is to use virtualdub to extract the audio as a .wav audio menucheck full processing mode, audio menuconversion44100Hz, filesave .wav.This might be a good time to check your FPS as well filefile information. Next, use the wizard inTMPGEnc fileproject wizard if you closed it.Next, select Video CD if you plan on making a VCD 80 minutes per CD, lesser quality or Super Video CD if you plan on making a SVCD 40 minutes per CD, higher quality.Select your type of video If your framerate was 29.97, NTSC. 23.976 is NTSC Film, and 25 is PAL. Press next. Select your .avi in the video file and the .wav you created in the audio file. Press next.Next once more unless the video is more than 80 minutes if you are making a VCD , or 40 for a SVCD see next question. Next one more time on the bitrate s! etting window. Tell it where you want your .mpeg to go, and then press OK you're now encoding a SVCD.Once encoded, burn using the SVCD function in Nero or your favourite burning program.
How can I make captures from DVD movies/media files?

One option is to get a program that allows screencaptures, such WinDVD or PowerDVD. For media files, you can try something like VirtualDub or NanDub.Another option is to go to your video card properties right click on desktoppropertiesSettings tabAdvanced buttonTroubleshoot tab. Then move the Hardware Acceleration down to None. This should allow you to take screencaptures from any media player. You may notice degraded performance. After you're done making your screencaptures, put the hardware acceleration back to normal. For Windows Mediaplayer 9, simply press CtrlI. WMP will default to saving it as capture.jpg in your My Pictures folder. You cannot save in any format except JPEG and BMP. This does not work for all formats. It will work in most if not all AVI and MPEG container movies, but WMV files tend to have copy protection of some sort which disallows WMP screenshots.

How would I dual boot Windows 9X/ME with Windows 2000/XP?

Install Windows 9XME first. After you have finished installing it, insert the Win2kXP CD and install Windows not upgrade. When it asks you to choose a directory, choose a different one from your Win9XME directory. It's also a good idea to split your Windows onto two different hard drives or partitions. Once the install is finished, you will get a bootloader option with a list of your operating systems.

Have a Windows 9x boot disk sitting around Use that. If not, check out httpwww.bootdisk.com and make yourself one. Also, in WinXP, go to My computer go to the format screen, check the create MSDOS boot disk option. This doesn't provide ASPI or CDROM support, however, for which you will need a win98 boot disk.
